Selling is a profession unto itself. Selling requires the ability to overcome rejection. Selling requires that you are motivated by incentives rather than effort. Selling successfully requires multiple attributes that just aren't needed in other roles in any company. Some attributes cover other roles but none require the unique blend of guts, determination, empathy and motivation that are required in selling.
I am an avid fan of Verne Harnish. Verne is the author of 'Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, and in a recent newsletter, he included part of an article found in John Assaraf's Blog: 'The Spiritual Entrepreneur'. The title is "10 Questions - Do You Have What it Takes". This approach isn't limited to sales, selling and sales management, but missing elements from John's 10 will make sales success challenging at best.
An additional 21 core sales competencies also come into play that are specific to sales. We use the Objective Management Group's Sales Person Profile to help organizations and individuals identify their competencies in selling and the impact those competencies have on their sales results.
If you are lacking these competencies, you can expect sales results to be inconsistent- fortuitous, fleeting or flat.
